CLEARWATER, Fla. – Freshman Kourtney Salvarola came through in the clutch with a three-run home run in the fifth on Sunday to knock off Florida A&M 10-3 in the finale of the USF Series.
The Bulls, who jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Rattlers saw the score get cut to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but Salvarola's three-run bomb helped spark a six-run bottom of the inning leading to a 10-3 victory.
Salvarola went 1-for-3 from the dish in the win with a pair of runs scored and three RBI all coming on the fifth-inning round-tripper.
The freshman wasn't the only Bull to get their bat going against the Rattlers as all but two of the USF starters collected a hit, highlighted by a pair of hits by Janine Richardson to go along with a pair of runs scored.
The offense got going early on, and freshman Sara Nevins was able to contain the Rattler bats through the first 4.1 innings as she allowed just two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out three and walking one.
Nevins was replaced by Brittany Bowles before giving way to Lindsey Richardson who pitched magnificently over the final 2.1 innings surrendering just one hit and no runs while striking out one Rattler.
USF did not wait long to get the scoring started on Sunday as the bats came alive for four runs on two hits paired with a pair of errors to go up on the in-state foes 4-0 through one.
FAMU scratched across one run in the top of the fourth, and closed the gap to 4-3 in the fifth, but that was as close as they would get.
The Bulls exploded for six runs on seven hits including the three-run shot by Salvarola to bust the game open expanding the lead to 10-2 through five. The seven run lead would be more than enough for USF as Richardson shut down the Rattlers the rest of the way.
USF now sits at 18-15 after six straight weekends of tournaments including three as part of the USF Series which ended Sunday with the conclusion of the USF The Game Tournament, where the Bulls finished 3-2.
The Bulls will begin BIG EAST play this weekend as they travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. John's for a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday.
