The University of South Florida men's tennis team fell to No. 34 Miami (Fla.) 4-3 on Sunday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. USF, now 4-2 on the season, grabbed a doubles point win, but couldn't earn enough singles victories to clinch the match.
“It was good to get the doubles win, but we couldn't close it out,” USF head coach Don Barr said. “We were very close to beating a good team, and we'll need to be better the next time we come out. We can build on a performance like this one. We played well.”
USF's singles winners on the day were Wael Kilani over Waylon Chin, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the second singles position and
Federico Sabogal over Carl Sundberg, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4.
Lucas Jovita fell to Christian Blocker in the decisive three-set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at the top of the lineup and
Romain Deridder dropped his match to Keith Crowley 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Yannick Yoshizawa lost his first match of the year in a 6-4, 6-1 decision vs. Eduardo Pavia, and
Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard fell short in his match vs. Gabriel Flores, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Bulls' tandem of Kilani and Sabogal earned an 8-3 win in the last spot, and Deridder and Yoshizawa beat Blocker and Sundberg, 9-8 (7-5), for the point. Jovita and
Jamal Adderley fell 8-5 to Crowley and Chin.
