TAMPA -Snapping their four game winning streak, the University of South Florida baseball team's ninth inning rally fell short as the Bulls dropped a 3-2 decision against Florida Gulf Coast University Tuesday evening at the USF Baseball Stadium.
Down 3-0 heading into their portion of the ninth inning, the Bulls put the first two men on, then got back-to-back RBI singles by junior Todd Brazeal and freshman James Ramsay to cut the Eagles lead to 3-2 with one down in the final frame.
That would be as close as the Bulls would get as catcher Andrew Longley lined out to center for out No. 2 and centerfield Chad Taylor grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.
For the first time in six games, the Bulls would not score first as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly by Javi Sujo off Bulls starter Matt Reed.
Reed was solid in his second consecutive Tuesday start going 7.1 innings allowing just six hits. Reed kept the Florida Gulf Coast hitters off balance early on with good command of the strike zone and effective use of his off-speed pitches.
Reed deserved better as he kept the Bulls close allowing three runs over the span of the outing but suffered the loss.
The Bulls offense could never get on track against five FGCU pitchers striking out 14 times and stranding 14 runners.
Gulf Coast added a run in each the seventh and eighth innings off Reed. Junior Jimmy Moran relieved Reed working 1.2 innings allowing one hit and striking out three.
Offensively, Brazeal and junior Luis Llerena led the way with two hits each, accounting for four of the Bulls seven hits on the night.
USF will look to bounce back when they welcome No. 1 Florida to the USF Baseball Stadium tomorrow evening with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on the Bright House Sports Network. Florida comes to Tampa after suffering a 7-0 loss to Georgia Southern.
