Up Next For the Bulls: Game 38: Louisville | April 22 | 6:00 p.m. | Louisville, Ky. |
|
TAMPA- Scoring runs in each of the first three innings, the University of South Florida baseball team (18-18) climbed back to .500 with a 5-2 win over No. 18 Stetson(29-8) Tuesday night at the USF Baseball Stadium.
A two-run single by
Sam Mende in the bottom of the first inning got USF on the board and the Bulls would not look back, tacking on an unearned run in the second as
Junior Carlin sent a grounder off the glove of Stetson third baseman Ben Carhart to score
Luis Llerena.
The Bulls extended their lead to 5-0 on a two-run double by
James Ramsay in the bottom of the third, driving in his 17th and 18th runs of the season.
With a comfortable lead in hand, the USF pitching staff would take it from there, using five pitchers to limit a dangerous Stetson offensive attack to just five hits on the night.
Starter
Zach Pietrzyk cruised through three predetermined innings of work allowing just two hits, striking out two.
The start for Pietrzyk was his first since 2008 and just the second of his career. Despite throwing just three frames, his efforts were good enough to pick up his third win of the season.
Four pitchers combined to preserve the win for the Bulls in relief, including 1.2 innings from sophomore LHP
Kyle Parker, who made his season debut after having off-season shoulder surgery.
After a perfect fourth inning, Stetson would get to Parker for a run in the fifth before he gave way to
Andrew Loynaz. Loynaz allowed one hit in 2.1 innings, striking out three.
After extending his hit streak to 16 games in his first at-bat of the game with a double, senior
Junior Carlin came in from leftfield to the pitcher's mound to work an inning of scoreless relief in the eighth.
The Hatters would not go down without a fight as they would pick-up a run off senior closer
Kevin Quackenbush in a non-save situation. Quackenbush would shut the door after allowing the first two batters to reach before retiring the next three to end the game.
Seven different Bulls added to USF's nine-hit outing, led by two hits apiece from junior
Andrew Longley and sophomore
Chad Taylor.
The Bulls will now look to move above .500 for the first time this season when they head to Louisville for a three-game set against the Cardinals beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
