TAMPA – University of South Florida baseball signee RHP
Jose Fernandez was selected 14th overall in the 2011 MLB draft by the Florida Marlins Monday night.
Fernandez was 13-1 with a 1.35 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 93.0 innings leading Alonso HS to the Florida 2011 6A title last month. He tallied nine complete-game wins, including four shutouts, with a 5-0 record in the postseason.
The native of Cuba was just as impressive at the plate. Fernandez, who was named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year, hit .404 with nine homers and 35 RBI.
At 6-foot-3, 225-pound, Fernandez will now have until Aug. 15 to sign with the Marlin or decided to honor his commitment to USF.
He is the first USF player or signee to be drafted in this year's draft. In 2010, five signees were drafted with two deciding to opt against professional contracts.
