TAMPA – The Bulls' no-quit approach paid off during another Big East thriller Friday night.
Sarah Miller scored in the 84th minute and the USF women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory at Connecticut. The victory helped the Bulls (7-4-2, 3-2-2) surpass their 2011 win total with four games remaining in the regular season.
UConn outshot USF, 21-6, but the one that mattered belonged to the Bulls late in the game when Marsha Harper got a piece of a corner kick that set Miller up for her first goal of the season.
“I'm proud of the way the girls fought back because I didn't think it was one of our better starts to a game. But we progressively got better, our chances were dangerous and it was nice once again to be rewarded with a goal and a win,” head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. “It was a team effort, which we're seeing pretty consistently from this group.”
USF's defense was good as usual on a night that was highlighted by Christiane Endler's seven saves. The freshman keeper now has six shutouts to her credit. Jessica Montrose made three saves for the Huskies (7-6-1, 3-4-0).
“You want your goalkeeper to save some of those shots that probably should have gone in and I thought she was absolutely solid,” said Schilte-Brown of Endler. “A lot of their shots were long range and she just managed all of them really well.”
The Bulls are 3-0-1 in their past four games and shoot for another 2-0 weekend when they play at Providence 1 p.m. Sunday. USF wraps up its regular season homestand with Syracuse on Oct. 12 and St. John's on Oct. 14.
