PITTSBURGH - The reigning Big East pitcher of the week for the past three weeks is making a bid for a fourth.
Sophomore pitcher Sara Nevins struck out a career-high 16 batters Saturday, and didn't let an opponent reach first base after the first inning, no-hitting Pittsburgh on the road in a 5-0 USF win.
Nevins hit the third batter of the game with a pitch, but struck out the following hitter, making the Panthers' catcher the only Pittsburgh player to reach base. Nevins found a groove in the fourth, beginning a streak of eight consecutive strikeouts, including six following USF's five-run fifth.
The Bulls (31-5 overall, 4-0 Big East) weren't having much better luck at the plate, until a breakout fifth inning.
With two outs and in danger of wasting senior catcher Laura Fountain's leadoff single, USF strung together four consecutive two-out hits, scoring all five runs on three straight hits.
Gina Kafalas began the streak with a bunt single, advancing Jessica Mouse to second base. Sydney Dinelli came on as a pinch hitter, and drove the 0-2 pitch back up the middle to score Mouse and break the tie. Stephanie Medina followed with an RBI single, and Kenshyra Jackson capped the rally, blasting the first-pitch she saw over the right-field fence for a three-run homer.
Medina's single extended the sophomore's hitting streak to 10 games, and Jackson's homer - her fifth - gave the junior her ninth multi-RBI game of the season. Seven different Bulls recorded hits, Kourtney Salvarola the only to have two as USF won its 11th-straight game.
