TAMPA – Edwin Moalosi led the charge with two goals as USF rolled past Cincinnati, 4-1, for its first American Athletic Conference victory Wednesday at Corbett Stadium.
USF (4-2-4, 1-1-1) set a new single-game season high in scoring while finishing with a 24-5 shot advantage. The Bulls are 5-0-1 against Cincinnati at home since the Bearcats left Tampa with a 2-1 victory back in 1999.
“The team looked possessed keeping the game in the attacking half and jumping on Cincinnati,” head coach George Kiefer said. “It's a good feeling when guys put in that type of work and get rewarded for it.”
Cincinnati (3-8-1, 0-4-0) struck first with Ashani Walker's fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute, but the Bulls bounced back in a big way before halftime. Stiven Salinas evened things up with his second goal of the season in the 34th minute off an assist from Moalosi.
USF took a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to Moalosi's goal in the 43rd minute and the redshirt junior struck again on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
“I thought our group was good. They didn't change their ways because they were down a goal,” Kiefer said. “To score two in the first half, that was nice.”
Gerardo Hernandez capped off the scoring with his first goal as a Bull in the 70th minute off an assist from Wesley Charpie.
“There are a lot of guys with talent and a lot of guys that can get goals,” Kiefer said. “The funny thing is we've hit a lot of posts this season, but I believe you hit a few posts throughout the year and they start to go in for you.”
The Bulls are back in action 3 p.m. Saturday at Temple before returning to Corbett Stadium to host SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
