TAMPA – Lindo Mfeka continued his hot streak for USF, scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the Bulls' 1-1 tie with SIU-Edwardsville Tuesday night at Corbett Stadium.
Despite a very even first half the Bulls went into the locker room trailing the Cougars 1-0.
USF (4-2-6, 1-1-2) surrendered a goal in the 42nd minute when Christian Volesky tapped one home from five yards out on a cross by Paul Scheipeter.
After the break the Bulls came out with a lot of energy and began to dictate the pace of play, recording a couple of early shots and controlling the ball in the SIU-Edwardsville (5-5-2, 1-0-0) half.
After a couple of quality chances, USF was finally able to break through in the 67th minute. Mfeka hammered home a poor clearance from a Cougar defender from about 12 yards out to tie the game at one.
“Lindo is a very dangerous player,” head coach George Kiefer said. “He's in a grove right now, the goal he scored, there was no doubt it was going in when it left his foot.”
Sophomore forward Terry Delancy also produced a couple of good chances late in the match. Delancy had a header that was saved by SIU-Edwardsville goalkeeper John Berner in the 79th minute and a shot from about 12 yards out about a minute later that he sent just wide.
USF outshot the Cougars 10-3 in the second half but would have to settle for overtime.
Neither team was able to generate much in the first overtime period, but freshman midfielder Marcus Epps had another good opportunity for the Bulls in the 104th minute, only to be denied by Berner who made seven saves on the night.
The Bulls outshot the Cougars 20-11 for the game and had nine corners compared to only one for SIU-Edwardsville.
“I thought the guys did an excellent job in the second half pinning them in,” Kiefer said. “That's just a reflection of where the game was played for the most part. If they keep sticking with that, moving the ball and playing good soccer the results will start to turn our way.”
Senior goalkeeper Brentton Muhammad had another solid game, making six saves on the night for USF.
The Bulls will hit the road this weekend when they travel to Rutgers for an important American Athletic Conference match against the Scarlet Knights on Saturday night. They return home on Wednesday, Oct. 23 for a big match with in-state rival UCF.
