TAMPA - Lindo Mfeka scored two goals and Ben Sweat added another for USF in its 3-0 win over California State Bakersfield (2-5-1) on Tuesday at Corbett Stadium.
USF (3-1-4) played 22nd ranked Connecticut in its conference opener to a 1-1 draw last Friday night. The Bulls netted a season-high three goals on Tuesday, with all of them coming in the second half.
After an hour and a half delay due to a power outage, Mfeka put USF on the board in the 48th minute. Edwin Moalosi and Kennedy Selorm Adablah were credited with the assists.
Mfeka didn't stop there. The freshman scored his third goal of the season and second of the game to put the Bulls up 2-0 in the 82nd minute off a rebound after Wesley Charpie hit the post.
“It was all teamwork, I give credit to my guys,” Mfeka said about his two goals. “For me it was just easy to tap it in because they did all the work.”
The Bulls still weren't done. In the 86th minute, Sweat scored his first of the season off an assist from Stiven Salinas, putting the game out of reach at 3-0.
“I think the guys came out in second half with a very good mentality,” head coach George Kiefer said. “We knew that Bakersfield was a good team, but once we could win balls and play forward, we could get some chances and they did exactly that.”
USF outshot Bakersfield 18-8 in the game. Senior goalkeeper Brentton Muhammad made two saves in his third shutout of the season.
“Brentton is a very good communicator,” Kiefer said. “You could hear him from the press box I bet. He's very good in the air, very good communicating, and he can make the tough saves as well.”
The Bulls jump back into conference play on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they hit the road to take on Memphis. USF returns home on Oct. 9 to host conference foe Cincinnati. Kickoff from Corbett Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
