TAMPA – Stiven Salinas scored the only goal on Senior Night in USF's 1-0 victory over Detroit Mercy (3-9-4) Tuesday night at Corbett Stadium.
USF (6-3-7) took down the SMU Mustangs 4-1 on Saturday and looked to finish out the home schedule with a win.
Before the game started, Ben Sweat, Stiven Salinas, Samuel Hosseini, Luis Avila, Isaiah Ferguson and Brentton Muhammad were honored at midfield to kickoff the senior night festivities.
“They've been a special group,” head coach George Kiefer said. “I got a little choked up, I normally don't, but we've spent so much time together. I think they're doing an excellent job leading the team this year. You always want a little bit longer with your seniors.”
The Bulls found the back of the net first in the 17th minute when Salinas took a shot from 18 yards out and bent it in the top right corner of the goal for his fourth tally of the season.
“It's a great feeling,” Salinas said. “I give it all to my teammates. It wasn't just me scoring the goal. It was a team effort by the group, not just by one person.”
Muhammad made four saves for his fifth shutout of the season.
“It's always good to get a shutout,” the senior goalkeeper said. “It's good to come out and put a good performance on for our fans and our family members also.”
USF outshot Detroit 20-10 in the match and could have easily scored a couple more goals. The Bulls dominated the first half with a 15-5 shot advantage and also hit the post late in the second half.
The Bulls have one more regular season match, as they head to Louisville to face the Cardinals on Sunday Nov. 3 in another American Athletic Conference tilt. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and a win would give USF a chance to host an AAC quarterfinal match on Saturday, Nov. 9.
