TAMPA - Danielle Mills dug deep and delivered a valuable
victory for USF on Sunday afternoon.
Mills' 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win over Whitney Byrd got the Bulls
past No. 46 Georgia State, 4-3, at the USF Varsity Courts. The Bulls have won
three straight after starting the week with a 5-2 victory over Miami (Ohio)
Thursday in Tampa.
"It's a great feeling to beat a ranked team," head coach
Agustin Moreno said. "This team last year beat us, 4-3, so it was a good way to
come back against exactly the same team."
The Bulls took command of the match early on by clinching
the doubles point. Katie Vasenina and Loreto Alonso-Martinez got past Maryna
Kozachenko and Jocelyn Ffriend, 8-4. Paula Montoya and Fanny Fracassi locked up
the point by outlasting Linn Timmermann and Chaimaa Roudami, 8-6.
Vasenina and Fracassi won their singles matches in straight
sets before Georgia State forced the decisive match.
The Bulls' home stand continues 2 p.m. Tuesday against
Cincinnati. Admission is free all regular season at the USF Varsity Courts.
