TAMPA, FEB. 19, 2014 – The Bulls made the short trek down I-4 to UCF on Wednesday for their first American Athletic Conference match of the season and came home with a big win, defeating the Knights, 6-1.
The day started out quickly at the UCF Tennis Complex, with the Bulls taking two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. The newly-formed team of
Loreto Alonso-Martinez and
Alessandra Bonte defeated UCF's Courtney Griffith and Josephine Haraldson 8-6 in the first match.
Olga Martinez and
Vera Bessonova took the third match in a tiebreaker, defeating Caroline Eberhart and Clare Mendell 8-7 (5).
The Bulls had a strong showing in singles, taking five of the six matches to clinch their first conference victory. Loreto-Alonso moved up to the number one spot for the first time this season and picked up a win in a tough three-set match, beating Josephine Haraldson 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The freshman duo of
Vera Bessonova and
Olga Martinez both had victories on courts four and five, with Bessonova defeating Sofia Baptista 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and Martinez besting Cortney Cesarini 6-3, 6-1.
Alessandra Bonte got a win in her first dual match of the season, quickly defeating Clare Mendell 6-1, 6-1.
Fanny Fracassi had the last victory, beating Caroline Eberhart.
The No. 61 Bulls will be back in action this Sunday, Feb. 23, against Missouri on the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. That day will also mark Kids Day which encourages children to attend the match and attend a 30-minute clinic afterwards. The matches will begin at 11 a.m. with doubles play followed by singles.
