Record Breaking Relay Leads Bulls at Home

TAMPA, Fla., April 4, 2014 – USF's 4x100 meter relay team broke the school record on Friday with a winning time of 40.34 seconds at the USF Collegiate.
The time was the second best in the American Athletic Conference, whose championship event will be held at the USF Track and Field Stadium May 2-4. The record-setting team, in order of legs ran was Derrick Hopkins (Opa Locka), Chareif Lewis (Clermont), Dae Young Yoon (Hollywood) and Alfred Higgs (Bahamas). The old mark was 40.75 seconds set in 2010.
The relay team was one of six event winners for the men including sophomore Matthew O'Neal (Jackson, Miss.) who placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 52-9.50 in front of teammate Shane Lewis (Orlando) who finished second (50-6).
Freshman Christopher Grinley (Lake Worth) won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.14, the fourth best in school history. Higgs improved his career best time in the 100m (10.41) and placed second. Lewis moved to ninth in school history in the 200m while placing fifth (21.48).
Franklin Mosely (Tampa) was sixth in the 200m (21.64), but shined in the 400m run with a second place time of 47.58 which ranks fifth at USF.
Junior Devin Screen's discus throw of 170-10 was good for second place and fourth in school history.
Two Bulls took home titles for the women which were Courtney Anderson (Cape Coral) in the high jump at 5-10 and Natasha Stewart (Vero Beach) in the long jump at 18-11.25.
USF placed second, third and fourth in the 100m hurdles. Laticia Sims (Detroit, Mich.) placed second and improved her mark in the hurdles up to fourth with a time of 13.89. Rachael Klinger (Niceville) entered the top 10 record books in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.01, the eighth best time in school history and placed third. Also entering the record books in the hurdles was Khadeeja Dooling (Lauderdale Lakes) at 10th with a time of 14.14 and placed fourth.
Ashanti Stewart (Ocala) improved her best time in the 400m at 55.78 and was one of 25 seniors recognized for their collegiate careers mid-way through the meet.
Hannah Gospodinsky (Wadsworth, Ohio) placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 46-1.5 which moved the junior up to sixth in the school record books. Mira Carozza (Pittsburgh, Pa.) moved up to fourth in the record book in the javelin with a third place throw of 139-6.
