TAMPA, May 2, 2014 – Three Bulls recorded top five finishes in the first day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the USF Track and Field Complex.
Inclement weather delayed the start of the inaugural meet 2.5 hours, but finished on schedule. The USF men are in fourth place with eight points while SMU leads the eight teams with 51 points. The women stand in fifth place with five points. All 10 women's teams trail SMU which has 47 points.
Saturday's action begins at 12:30 p.m. with the men's javelin while the track events start at 4:30 p.m. with the 1,500m run. The heptathlon resumes at 5 p.m. with the long jump.
A rundown of USF's results is below.
Heptathlon
After four events, junior Rachael Klinger (Niceville) will enter Saturday in fourth place with 3109 points. She had the field's best 100m hurdle time of 14.18 (953). Senior Lindsay Arnold (Zephyrhills) is in fifth place (2918). She had the second best time in the 200 meters at 25.66 (827).
Women's Hammer
Freshman Rebecca Evans (Winter Springs) finished in 14th place with a throw of 145-10. Helena Perez of SMU was conference champion (200-10).
Men's Hammer
Junior Devin Screen (Tallahassee) medaled with a fifth place finish. His throw of 179-03 earned four points for the Bulls. Josh Province of Cincinnati was the champion at 189-04.
Men's 3,000m Steeplechase
Sophomore Michael Babinec (Riverview) finished in fifth place with a personal best time of 9:18.99. Along with a medal, he picked up four points towards the Bulls' team score. Edwin Kibichily of Louisville won the race in 8:55.93.
Women's 3,000m Steeplechase
Sophomore Bethany Evans (Neptune Beach) earned a medal for her fifth place finish in a time of 11:03.08. She beat her previous personal best of 11:37.96 and earned four points towards the Bulls' team score. Freshman Sarah Hartman (Tampa) earned one point with an eighth place finish in a time of 11:32.77. SMU's Tova Magnusson won the race in a time of 10:17.84.
