TAMPA, May 3, 2014 – Juniors Chase Meyers and Giscard Petion earned all-conference honors in the high jump on Saturday, day two of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Petion was conference runner-up with a jump of 6-08.75 (2.05m), a half inch better than his previous best of 6-8.25 achieved last season. Petion, a Tampa native and third team all-conference performer at American Indoor, tied Bryan Kilts and Richard Wilson for ninth all-time in school history.
Meyers (Punta Gorda) was third team all-conference by placing third with a jump of 6-06.75 (2.00m). They both trailed Darius Lynwood of Memphis who won with a height of 6-10.75 (2.10m).
The final day of the conference championships, held at the USF Track and Field Stadium, will take place on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's pole vault, men's discus and women's triple jump. USF's Marqueshia Stallworth enters the triple jump ranked first in the conference. Matthew O'Neal and Shane Lewis rank one and two, respectively, in the conference in the men's triple jump which will take place at noon.
The track events are scheduled to start at 11:10 a.m. with the women's 400m relay and conclude at 2:15 with the men's 1,600m relay.
Below is a rundown of USF's results and qualifiers from Saturday's prelims.
Women's Heptathlon
Junior Rachael Klinger (Niceville) entered the second day of the heptathlon in fourth place and finished there with 4998 points. Her medal worthy performance came after an injury (pinky finger, elbow) in practice earlier this week left Klinger and the coaching staff in doubt of whether or not she would compete over the weekend. She had the field's best 100m hurdle time of 14.18 (953), second best 800 meter time of 2:26.91 (732) and third best long jump at 5.57m (720). Senior Lindsay Arnold (Zephyrhills) placed seventh (4743). She had the second best time in the 200 meters on Friday at 25.66 (827).
Women's Javelin
Sophomore Onalee Collins (North Haven, Conn.) placed seventh with a personal best throw of 131-10 (40.19m) to pick up two points for the Bulls. Sophomore Mira Carrozza (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished 11th with at 122-11 (37.47m). SMU's Lucija Civitanovic won the event with a throw of 166-01 (50.63m).
Women's Pole Vault
Junior Brittany London (Middleville, Mich.) tied with Sarah Rasnick and Amanda Hotaling of Cincinnati and Chelsea Bingham of Louisville for sixth place. Her vault of 11-07 (3.53m) earned 1.20 points for the Bulls. Mallory Johnson (Hobe Sound) and Sophia Brown (Goshen, Ind.) also had a mark of 11-07 (3.53m), but cleared the height on their second attempt. They both tied for 11th place. Carolina Carmichael of Memphis was champion at 13-4.50 (4.08m).
Women's Long Jump
Junior Natasha Stewart (Vero Beach) placed fifth with a distance of 19-03.25 (5.87m) in her first of six jumps. She earned a medal and four points for the Bulls. Sophomore Torriah Bell (Quincy) finished 14th with a distance of 17-11.50 (5.47m). Gabrielle Farquharson of Rutgers was champion in the event with a mark of 20-03.50 (6.18m).
Men's Shot Put
Junior Devin Screen (Tallahassee) finished ninth with a mark of 52-08 (16.05m). Yannik Schaly from Memphis was champion at 60-04 (18.39m).
Women's Shot Put
Junior Hannah Gospodinsky (Wadsworth, Ohio) finished 11th with a mark of 45-08.50 (13.93m). Freshman Brandi Lucas (Vero Beach) was 16th at 39-01.25 (11.43m). Temple's Margo Britton was champion at 52-08.75 (16.07m).
Women's 5,000m
Freshman Kaitlyn Campo (Orlando) finished 12th in a time of 18:21.54 and senior Alicia McLean (Boca Raton) was 15th at 19:17.47. SMU's Agnes Sjostrom won with a time of 16:09.28.
