TAMPA, (May 3, 2014) – Louisville sophomore Kyle Funkhouser out-dueled Bulls' junior Casey Mulholland in the series opener at the USF Baseball Stadium, pitching 7 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball to help the eighth-ranked Cards top USF 3-1 in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.

USF (24-21) led off four innings with a hit, but stranded 11 runners and hit into a pair of double-plays as Louisville worked around six walks to hold the Bulls off the scoreboard for eight innings.

Mulholland countered for the Bulls, pitching himself out of trouble through 5 2/3 innings and surviving six walks. Louisville finally broke onto the scoreboard against Mulholland in the fifth, collecting a one-out, two-run single up the middle to take a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore left fielder Hayden Kelley helped prevent any further damage in the fifth, making a great catch on the warning track to help USF out of the jam. Louisville would get another run in the seventh, slicing an RBI single into right field against senior left-hander Janick Serrallonga. Serrallonga posted a good outing in relief, pitching 3 1/3 and giving up just two hits.

With two outs in the ninth, the Bulls broke onto the scoreboard as sophomore third baseman Nik Alfonso worked a walk, and came around to score on back-to-back singles by juniors Austin Lueck and Kyle Teaf.

With runners on the corners and the winning run at the plate, Louisville closer Nick Burdi coaxed Bulls' DH Luke Boarders into a game-ending pop-up.

Mulholland suffered his first loss of the season, giving up five hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Offensively, Lueck collected USF's only 2-hit game, while Alfonso went 1-2 with a walk and run scored.
