TAMPA, AUG. 24, 2014— The USF women's soccer team is still looking for its first win of the season after a 2-0 loss to the Florida Gators (2-0-0) Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, three Bulls registered shots in the span of five minutes to start the second half with momentum. Senior Daniela Andrade and junior Diana Saenz each recorded a shot-on-goal, forcing the Florida goalkeeper to make a save both times. Miller's shot from the far left wing was blocked, keeping USF from taking what could have been a 3-0 lead.
The Bulls freshman goalkeeper, Katarina Elliott, had two crucial saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the Gators off the board, despite their six shots.
Just as USF (0-2-0) was gaining momentum in the second half, lightning and rain in the area forced a two-hour delay at the 58-minute mark.
After the delay, Florida took the lead after a shot by Annie Speese at the 67-minute mark. A corner kick in the 81st minute by USF had the potential to be the tying shot, but the Bulls couldn't find a way to capitalize.
Florida added an insurance goal in the 84th minute as Annie Speese once again put the ball past Elliott to give the Gators a 2-0 lead. With 45 seconds left to play, Elliot made one last crucial save to keep Florida at only two goals.
The Bulls will look to bounce back this weekend as they return to Corbett Stadium for a two-game homestand. USF will face Navy on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. and FCGU on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 6:00 p.m.
The USF women's soccer team has posted two consecutive 10-plus win seasons and three in the last four years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance and recorded their first tournament victory in 2010. USF returns 23 players from last year's roster including All-American Athletic Conference second team forward Demi Stokes and All-Rookie Team defender Leticia Skeete. They also bring back 11 players that appeared in 15 or more games last season.
