PHILADELPHIA, JAN. 11, 2015 – A big first-half push and another solid defensive effort helped seal the deal for USF's seventh consecutive win Sunday.
The Bulls (13-3 overall, 4-0 The American) held Temple to just 29 percent shooting while knocking down 51 percent of their own shots, and used a 15-point first-half lead to knock out the Owls, 70-58 in Philadelphia. It was the fourth consecutive game USF held its opponents to less than 30 percent shooting from the field.
Junior guard Courtney Williams made a 21-point, 12-rebound game look effortless, adding six assists to help the Bulls cruise past Temple, as USF never trailed and never tied the Owls after the opening whistle, leading by as much as 22 in the second half.
Knocking down all three 3-pointers in the first half, USF's defense jumpstarted the offense early, allowing the Bulls to outscore Temple 12-2 in first-half fastbreak points. Freshman forward Laura Ferreira knocked down a pair of fastbreak three-pointers early in the half en route to her sixth double-digit scoring game of her young career.
Continuing her strong play since getting healthy, sophomore center Katelyn Weber pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to go with eight points, just missing her first career double-double in the process. Usually leading the team in rebounds, junior forward Alisia Jenkins grabbed just three boards, but added 14 points as eight different players scored and 12 played.
USF now has 10 wins against RPI top 200 opponents, five of which coming against opponents in the RPI top 60. Temple was the 11th team to shoot worse than 35 percent against USF this season.
