STORRS, Conn., JAN. 18, 2015 – Courtney Williams poured in a game-high 23 points but the No. 25 Bulls couldn't keep their perfect American Athletic Conference record intact Sunday at No. 2 UConn.
Breanna Stewart posted 17 points and 10 rebounds, and four Huskies finished in double figures as USF's eight-game winning streak came to an end with a 92-50 loss at Gampel Pavilion.
UConn (16-1, 6-0) limited USF to 26 percent shooting from the field and allowed just 19 points in the second half of its 15th straight victory. Stewart finished with five of UConn's 15 total blocks.
“We have to get back to work and get better,” head coach Jose Fernandez said. “We were prepared to play this game, our effort was good. We just did not make very good decisions on either side of the ball.”
In a battle of first-place teams in the league, UConn started the game on a 9-0 run and headed into halftime with a 49-31 lead. UConn started with a 30-10 advantage in the paint.
“I just thought in the first half they took us out of a lot of things we wanted to do,” Fernandez said. “Turnovers were an issue. I thought we didn't defend the paint like we should have.”
The Huskies extended their lead with a 17-0 run in the second half as USF was held scoreless for about 8 ½ minutes and missed 12 straight shots. The Bulls (14-4, 5-1) went 7-for-31 (22 percent) from the field after the break.
UConn's stingy defense couldn't prevent Williams from jumping into double figures for the 17th time this season. The junior guard from Folkston, Ga., went 3-for-5 from long range and added six rebounds.
Senior guard Tamara Taylor (St. Petersburg) finished with eight points after knocking down a pair of 3-pointers and sophomore center Katelyn Weber (Little Rock, Ark.) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds. Junior forward Alisia Jenkins (Statesboro, Ga.) led the Bulls on the boards with eight rebounds and freshman forward Laura Ferreira (Portugal) added seven points and five rebounds.
USF wraps up its two-game road trip at Houston on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. before heading back to the Sun Dome to take on Tulane on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. Purchase tickets HERE.
