TAMPA (Oct. 8, 2015) – For the first time since 2013, the USF women's soccer team finished with an undefeated home season after playing Memphis to a 2-2 draw in double overtime Sunday afternoon.
USF (11-2-2, 4-1-1 AAC) allowed just two goals at home this season, both coming today. Before the two goals, the Bulls had outscored opponents 16-0 at Corbett and finished the home slate with an 18-2 goal advantage.
With the tie, the Bulls remain in first place in the conference standings with 13 points and a 4-1-1 record. UConn, who the Bulls defeated 1-0 at Corbett, is in second with 12 points.
The Bulls fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the game thanks to goals from Trudi Carter and Olivia Chance. In the 64th minute, Carter finally broke through on a cross inside the box from Chance to put USF within one of the Tigers (7-4-3, 2-1-2). On the pass from Chance, Carter had an open net and was able to punch in the ball.
Ten minutes later, Chance got a goal of her own on an assist from Carlotta Fennefoss. Fennefoss dribbled down midfield before crossing to Chance just inside the box. Chance beat the Memphis keeper and punched in her seventh goal of the season to tie the game.
In overtime, the Bulls controlled the pace of the game and had the most opportunities. Leticia Skeete and Jackie Simpson each had headers that went wide, before Skeete had a shot go off the far post. With 36 seconds left, Ocean Parr sent a shot just wide of the net.
Memphis took a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the game. On a cross into the box, Marie Levasseur headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net. Not less than three minutes later, Valerie Sanderson went one-on-one with USF keeper Kat Elliot and was able to get the ball past her into the net.
USF had its chances in the first half and almost took an early lead on a shot by Simpson that went just over the cross bar. In the 25th minute, Carter went one-on-one with the Memphis keeper, but her shot went just wide of the net.
The Bulls outshot Memphis 15-8 on the game with Chance and Carter leading the way with four shots apiece. Kat Elliott made two saves, including a crucial save on a free kick with three minutes remaining in the second overtime period.
USF finishes the season with three road conference matches. The Bulls will travel to Texas for the third time this season to take on Houston and SMU. USF will face Houston Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. and SMU Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. The Bulls wrap up the regular season at UCF on Oct. 23.
The USF women's soccer team has posted three consecutive 10-plus win seasons and four in the last five years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010 and returned in 2014. USF returns 20 players from last year's roster including All-American Athletic Conference first team midfielder Olivia Chance and second team defender Jackie Simpson. They also bring back 12 players that appeared in 15 or more games last season.
