DALLAS (Nov. 3, 2015)— Semifinal bound.
With a 3-0 win over No. 7 Memphis, the second-seeded USF women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament in dominating fashion.
Taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, USF used two second half goals from senior Jackie Simpson to push past the Tigers and earn the team's 11th shutout of the season.
Just over a minute into the second half, Simpson, the 2015 American Defensive Player of the Year, recorded her third goal of the season to give USF a 2-0 lead. Senior Olivia Chance slipped the ball to Simpson just inside the 18-yard box and Simpson punched the ball in just past the reach of the Memphis keeper.
Simpson would strike again in the 53rd minute on an assist from Trudi Carter. Simpson's second shot was a loose ball in the box that she netted from ten yards out. The senior now has four goals on the season and her first career multi-goal game
Leticia Skeete notched her sixth goal of the season to put the Bulls up 1-0 in the 13th minute. Chance sent a corner kick right to Skeete who chested in the ball just past the Memphis keeper. Chance, who earned the assist on two of the goals, now has ten assists on the year and needs just three more to tie the all-time USF record single-season record.
USF used a 9-5 shot advantage and a 3-2 corner kick advantage to control the momentum of the first half. In the second half, USF outshot Memphis 5-0 to finish the game with a 14-5 shot advantage. Sophomore keeper Kat Elliott had to make just two saves on the night thanks to an outstanding effort from the USF defense.
The Bulls will play the winner of the UCF/Temple match on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 8:30 p.m. ET in the semifinals. That match can be viewed on the American Digital Network.
The USF women's soccer team has posted three consecutive 10-plus win seasons and four in the last five years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010 and returned in 2014. USF returns 20 players from last year's roster including All-American Athletic Conference first team midfielder Olivia Chance and second team defender Jackie Simpson. They also bring back 12 players that appeared in 15 or more games last season.
