Bulls' Offense Awakens in 88-75 Win Over Dolphins

Box Score

TAMPA, DEC. 16, 2015 – Five Bulls scored in double figures including a career-best 22 points from freshman Jahmal McMurray as the USF men's basketball team recorded the 600th win in its' program history in an 88-75 win over Jacksonville on Wednesday in the Sun Dome.

USF (3-8) shot 63.3 percent from the field, the fourth best in school history and the highest since Nov. 26, 2004 when the Bulls shot a school-record 64.7 percent against Stetson. McMurray made six of USF's nine 3-pointers to finish 56.3 percent from beyond-the-arc.

“I can't talk enough about him,” said head coach Orlando Antigua of the Topeka, Kan., native. “For a freshman to be 11 games in and play the amount of minutes that he's played and having the responsibility that we are putting on him, the way he's handling it is special. We are really excited about what he's doing.”

USF, which scored its most points in a game in two season, got another great performance from Jaleel Cousins. The senior center recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to go with a game-high three blocks.

Junior forward Chris Perry finished one rebound shy of a double-double with a season-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Nehemias Morillo scored a season-high 14 points to go with five assists. Senior forward Angel Nunez rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points to go with six rebounds. It was the first time USF had five players score at least 10 points since Nov. 12, 2013.

“I thought we did a really good job of finding the open man,” said head coach Orlando Antigua. “Something we've talked about in practice is not taking a good shot, but taking a great shot and finding the open guy. I thought in the NC State game we did that, but got a little gun shy and didn't take those opportunities when they were open. Today I thought we were a little looser, took those shots and were able to make them.”

USF never trailed in the game and led by as many as 22 points with 2:36 remaining in the first half. After a 44-25 halftime lead, Jacksonville (4-7) came out hungry and scored the first 13 points of the second half.

“I wanted us to come out with a lot more fight and a lot more passion and we didn't,” said Antigua. “I had to call a timeout right away and challenge those guys. I think that's the one time where I really started to turn it up a little bit on them because I saw them being too relaxed and that's when you get into trouble.”

Jacksonville cut the deficit to six points, 44-38, with 17:13 left in the game and to five points, 57-52, with 12:29 remaining. However, the Bulls remained hot from the field and shot 62.5 percent in the second half while they continued to win the battle of the boards. USF outrebounded JU in the game 45-21.

The Dolphins were led by Kori Babineaux's 21 points and 20 points from Marcel White. Jacksonville shot 40.9 percent from the field including 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from 3-point range.

USF plays host to UAB on Saturday at 7 p.m. Visit www.USFBullsTix.com to purchase tickets in the Sun Dome.
