TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2015)— In an uncommon occurrence, the USF baseball team finished its series against the Wagner Seahawks, deadlocked in a 4-4 tie after extra innings.
The game was called after eleven innings due to Wagner's travel plans. The Bulls had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh, but were unable to secure the walk-off win.
“It's not a loss, but it feels like a loss,” head coach Mark Kingston said. “We had plenty of opportunities to get the winning run in, but we didn't take advantage of it.
Wagner struck first, bringing in two runs in the first inning. Two walks and an error loaded the bases for the Seahawks with one out before Anthony Godino hit a two-RBI single to left field.
After two scoreless innings from the Bulls, Austin Lueck hit a solo home run on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the third to put USF within one of Wagner. It was the third of the senior's career and his first since 2013.
Daniel Portales got things started off right in the fourth, doubling to center field. Luke Maglich followed up with an RBI single to tie the game at two.
Wagner would take back the lead in the seventh with a Ben Ruta RBI single. USF loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to drive anyone home.
The Bulls finally took the lead in the eighth as Luke Borders hit a two-out, two-run homer, driving in his brother, Levi, who had reached on a single to left field. It was the second home run of Luke's career and the third by a Borders' sibling this season.
The top of the ninth inning saw Wagner tie the game after chaos ensued with two outs. The Seahawks had runners at the corners and were set to load the bases after Godino walked. A wild pitch, resulting in the fourth ball, allowed Nick Mascelli to score after a throwing error at the plate. The throwing error allowed Nick Dini to advance to third, but he was tagged out by RHP Michael Farley on his attempt to make it home.
Due to the tie, there was a no decision on the game. Freshman Joe Cavallaro was in line for the win, with Farley earning the save before the ninth inning. Cavallaro worked a career-high five innings, striking out a career-high five batters while giving up only two runs (one earned) on three hits.
"He's stepping up," Kingston said. "He gave us everything he needed to give us. We should have won that game for him."
The Bulls will be back on the field Tuesday, Feb. 24, as they take on Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
