TAMPA, FEB. 3, 2015 – USF women's basketball's dominance over in-state rival UCF continued with a 91-68 rout Tuesday night at the Sun Dome.
Courtney Williams led four players in double figures with 26 points in the Bulls' 16th consecutive victory over the Knights, a streak that has lasted 34 years. Tamara Taylor scored all her 18 points in the second half while Alisia Jenkins finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Laura Ferreira added 11 points in the fourth straight win for USF (18-4, 9-1).
The Bulls turned in a solid, all-around effort with 15 different players seeing game action. USF shot 54 percent, posted 20 assists and ruled the boards by a 37-24 margin. USF also made 10 3-pointers and set a season high by going 56 percent from beyond the arc.
“I thought we did a great job sharing the ball,” head coach Jose Fernandez said. “I think we made the extra pass today and we knocked good shots down. I thought we did a very good job on the glass.”
Williams extended her 20-point scoring streak to seven games in a hurry by pouring in 22 points in the first half. The junior guard from Folkston, Ga., started 9-for-15 from the field with five assists as USF cruised into the break with a 45-28 lead.
“I don't really think about it. I just go out there and play,” said Williams, who is currently one of just three players in the country to register at least six 20-point games in a row.
Jenkins added nine points and seven rebounds in the first half to help the Bulls begin with a 19-8 advantage on the boards and an 18-10 edge in points in the paint. Jenkins, a sophomore forward from Statesboro, Ga., has posted four straight double-doubles and has 15 overall this season.
USF's offense stayed in high gear after the break as Taylor and Ferreira combined to make six 3-pointers. Taylor went 4-for-5 from beyond the arc while Ferreira extended her 3-pointer streak to 13 games. The freshman from Portugal has made at least two 3-pointers in nine games.
Zykira Lewis, the second-leading scorer in the league behind Williams, finished with a game-high 27 points and Brittni Montgomery added 19 points in the third straight loss for UCF (7-15, 3-8). USF is now 22-8 all-time against UCF and a perfect 15-0 against the Knights in Tampa.
