TAMPA (Feb. 28, 2015)— On a rainy night, the USF baseball team dropped the second of a three-game series with High Point University, 10-3.
“We have to turn the page, that's all we can do,” head coach Mark Kingston said. “They played better defense than we did tonight and that's why they won. We've got to turn the page and try to come out and win the series tomorrow.”
The loss dropped the Bulls to 5-4-1, while the Panthers improved to 2-5. RHP Casey Mulholland took the loss, while Cas Silber earned the win for High Point.
High Point struck first in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of two errors by RHP Casey Mulholland to bring home two runs.
The Bulls were quick to respond in the bottom of the inning as Levi Borders launched a one-out RBI double to deep left field to bring home Kyle Teaf, who reached on a single.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bulls used a two-out rally to take the lead. Austin Lueck got things started after being hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. The senior advanced on a sac bunt and looked as he might be left stranded after Luke Borders flied out to left field.
Nik Alfonso got the scoring rally started as he hit an RBI single to drive home Lueck, before advancing to second on the throw. Kevin Merrell launched a double for the second straight game to drive home Alfonso and give the Bulls the lead.
The Panthers would answer in the top of the sixth, plating three runs on two errors. They would tack on another three in the seventh as RHP Michael Clarkson issued a bases loaded walk before giving up a two-RBI single. HPU would plate two more in the top of the ninth on a bases loaded wild pitch and RBI groundout.
In the loss, Mulholland (1-2) gave up five unearned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Lueck and Teaf both extended their on-base streaks to nine games as Lueck reached on a hit-by-pitch and Teaf singled.
Sunday's finale ends an eight-game homestand for USF. First pitch between the Bulls and Panthers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
