TAMPA, MARCH 13, 2015 – Levi Borders went yard twice and drove in six runs in a 10-5 win for the USF baseball team over Florida A&M Friday night at the USF baseball stadium. RHP Jimmy Herget earned his fourth win of the season, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out eight in five innings of work.
With two on and two out in the first Levi Borders launched a three-run homer over the left field wall to put the Bulls up 4-0.
Austin Lueck led off the inning with a single, before stealing second. Kyle Teaf drew a walk, allowing Lueck to advance on the wild pitch. Luke Borders drew a walk to load the bases before Buddy Putnam hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Lueck and put the Bulls up 1-0.
In the second, Lueck recorded an RBI single to bring home Luke Maglich, who reached on a leadoff single.
The Bulls continued their hot scoring streak in the third, bringing in five runs on five hits. For the third straight inning, the leadoff batter singled and stole second before scoring. Putnam doubled to bring home Teaf and put runners at second and third.
Once again, it was Levi Borders who came up big for USF, launching another three-run homer deep over the left field wall. It was the first time since 2012 that a Bull hit multiple home runs in one game. The junior now has four of the seven home runs that the Bulls have scored this season.
“Our offense was very good tonight and our defense was probably the best they've been all year,” head coach Mark Kingston said. “We drove the ball very well tonight and that's what it takes.”
After allowing a solo home run in the second inning, the Bulls held FAMU scoreless for six more innings. In the top of the ninth, the Rattlers cut the USF lead in half, scoring four runs on five hits.
The Bulls recorded their fifth straight win and improved to 11-6-1, while Florida A&M dropped to 7-9.
Levi Borders went 2-for-2 on the night, with two runs and six RBI. It's the first time since 2008 that a player has accounted for six RBI in one game. Teaf extended his on-base streak to 17 games and his hit-streak to seven games. Austin Lueck went 3-for-5 with one run and an RBI. Brandon Lawson pitched three perfect innings of relief, allowing no hits or walks and striking out two.
All nine starters recorded a hit in the game, just six days after all nine starters recorded a run in the series finale with Seton Hall. Lueck, Putnam, Levi Borders and Daniel Portales all recorded multiple-hit games.
The Bulls and Rattlers are back in action for game two of the series Saturday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m.
“Every day is a new day and a new opportunity to play the game you love,” Kingston said. “When we come out tomorrow we've got to come out ready to go.”
