Bulls Advance to Spring Break Tourney Title Match

TAMPA, MARCH 14, 2015 – The No. 20 Bulls played their way to the USF Spring Break Tournament title match with a 4-0 win over No. 63 Tulane in Saturday's semifinals.

USF (11-4) has won seven consecutive matches and will face UNC-Wilmington 3 p.m. Sunday in the championship at the USF Varsity Courts.

The Bulls' winning streak started with a championship victory at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic last month in Alabama and head coach Matt Hill remains impressed with how USF continues to raise its level of play during tournament action. The Bulls began their Spring Break Tournament run with a 4-0 win over Furman on Friday afternoon.

“We purposely scheduled more tournaments because we wanted to prepare for the conference tournament and the national championship,” Hill said. “They definitely get into a different mode. When we step into a tournament they seem to dial in and that's exciting to see because we have some good teams ahead of us.”

USF was dialed in right away against Tulane and secured the first point of the match in impressive fashion. Roberto Cid and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz posted a 6-2 win over Alex Van Cott and Ian Van Cott and the Bulls clinched the point with a 6-3 victory by Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts in the top doubles spot.

USF took a 2-0 lead with Pramming's 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex Van Cott and the Bulls kept rolling in singles play. Sasha Gozun defeated Constantin Schmitz, 6-3, 6-4, in the second position and Gonzalez-Muniz clinched match point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sebastian Rey in the fourth spot.

“Tulane has a very, very good team and we knew it was going to be a tough match. It was impressive to see the guys manage the matches cleanly,” Hill said. “We were serving for the match on every court, even the ones we didn't finish out. We felt really good today.”

The Bulls know they'll have to bring it again on Sunday to get past surging UNC-Wilmington. The Seahawks (8-3) upset No. 25 Drake on Friday and rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to beat No. 45 Penn State, 4-3, in Saturday's other semifinal match.

“They're playing with a lot of confidence, so it's going to be a battle,” Hill said.

Admission is free to Sunday's championship match at the USF Varsity Courts.
