TAMPA, MARCH 15, 2015 – The USF softball team bounced back from its first loss in 17 games with a 5-1 win over Army on Military Appreciation Day at the USF Softball Stadium on Sunday evening.
USF (25-8) jumped out to a quick lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and used another balanced attack at the plate to get past the Black Knights (7-13) to wrap up the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament.
Juli Weber hit her second triple in as many games to score Kristen Wyckoff, who led off the inning with a single to extend her hit streak to 13 games. Weber came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Lee Ann Spivey one batter later to make it 2-0 after one inning of play.
The Bulls tacked on two more runs in the third thanks to an error by Army on a groundball hit to third base by Monica Santos. Weber and Spivey came in to score on the play after starting the inning off with a walk and a single.
Army got a run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Kasey McCravey to cut the deficit to 4-1. However, the Bulls got it right back in the bottom half of the inning when Veronica Gajownik just missed her second home run of the season, doubling off the top of the left-field wall to score Spivey from second base.
Susan Wysocki got the start in the circle and pitched another solid game, going 5 2/3 innings while allowing just one run and tying a career-high with six strikeouts to improve to 6-0 this season.
“We have a great defense behind me so it's a lot easier to come in and just pound the plate and throw strikes and get people out,” Wysocki said after the game.
Sam Greiner and Karla Claudio combined to close out the game with Claudio earning her conference-leading sixth save of the season.
Even though American Athletic Conference play is right around the corner, head coach Ken Eriksen's isn't looking ahead and is focused on the Bulls' game against Central Connecticut State tomorrow at 6 p.m.
“We've got Central Connecticut State tomorrow. In the words of one of the greatest football coaches ever, 'I don't know what you're talking about, we're preparing for Central Connecticut State tomorrow',” Eriksen said.
