TAMPA (March 17, 2015)— Austin Lueck hit his third home run of the season and the Bulls picked up their eighth straight win in a 5-2 victory over Stetson Tuesday night at the USF baseball stadium.
The Bulls scored for three straight innings, starting by plating two runs in the second. Levi Borders walked and advanced on a wild pitch to lead off the inning. Buddy Putnam hit his fifth double of the year to score Levi and put the Bulls on top 1-0.
After a groundout double play to put two outs on the board, Austin Lueck hit the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his third home run of the season and fifth of his career.
The Bulls continued their scoring in the third inning, adding another run on a Levi Borders double to score his brother who reached on a walk. In the fourth, USF tacked on one more as Daniel Portales scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
Stetson tacked on two runs in the top of the sixth to cut into the Bulls lead. A double and hit-by-pitch put two on with no outs for the Hatters. A double down the right field line by Vance Mazeika scored two, before Ryan Valdes struck out two to end the inning.
USF got a run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to another wild pitch. Kyle Teaf singled with one out and stole second before advancing to third on a perfectly executed bunt by Kevin Merrell. With Luke Borders at the plate, Teaf scored on a wild pitch to put the Bulls on top 5-2.
Valdes went a career-high six innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, while striking out six. Tommy Peterson earned his conference-leading seventh save, striking out the final three batters of the game.
The Bulls continue their midweek tilt with a game against FIU Wednesday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m.
