NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. (April 3, 2015)— The University of South Florida baseball team dropped it's first conference game of the season in a 7-0 loss at UConn Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Bulls (21-10, 4-1 American) are still alone at the top of the conference standings as every other team has at least two losses.
UConn (19-10, 3-2 American) got a run in the first and never looked back. With one out, Vinny Siena drew a walk before coming home on an RBI double by Bobby Melley. The Huskies plated another three runs in the fourth on three hits and an error by first basemen Buddy Putnam to take a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies added two more runs against USF starter Casey Mulholland in the fifth. Mulholland picked up two easy groundouts to retire the first two batters before giving up a single to Willy Yahn. Jon Testani then followed up with a two-run home run to push the lead to 6-0. The final run came in the eighth on an RBI double by Blake Davey.
The Bulls broke up a no-hit bid for UConn southpaw Anthony Kay in the fifth with singles from Andres Leal and Kyle Teaf, but both were left stranded. The only other hits for the Bulls came in the seventh on a Leal double, and in the ninth on a Daniel Portales single.
Leal had the best outing of the day for the Bulls, going 2-for-3 with a walk and his seventh double of the season. Teaf's leadoff walk in the first inning was the 124th of his career, putting him just one away from tying for 10th all-time in USF history.
The two teams will meet in the rubber match of the series Saturday, April 3, at noon back in Storrs, Conn. at J. O. Christian Field. RHP Ryan Valdes will pick up his first weekend start after four appearances as a midweek starter.
