NEW ORLEANS (May 10, 2015) – Buddy Putnam drove in all three runs for USF, but it wasn't enough as the Bulls ultimately fell, 4-3, to Tulane in the rubber match of the series on Sunday.
The Bulls are now 30-21-1 on the season and 11-10 in conference play while Tulane is 31-19 and 11-10 as well.
It was a three-run fifth inning that ultimately changed the outcome of the game. A single and walk put two on with just one out for the Green Wave. Richard Carthon came to the plate and hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run to clear the bases and give Tulane the 4-2 lead.
Tulane took the early lead for the first time all series with an RBI single in the third inning. An error allowed Jake Rogers to reach first before moving to second on a flyout. With just one out, Richard Carthon hit a single through the right side to score Rogers from second and give the Green Wave the 1-0 lead.
The Bulls answered right back in the top of the fourth. With one out, Luke Maglich singled to extend his on-base streak to a team-leading 23 games. Luke Borders followed behind with a walk to put two on for senior first basemen Buddy Putnam. On a 1-2 count, Putnam laced a two-RBI double to the wall in left-center to give USF the 2-1 lead.
After the three-run fifth by the Green Wave, USF once again answered right back in the next half inning on Putnam's second RBI double of the day. Maglich led off the inning with a double of his own before moving to third on a groundout by Luke Borders. Putnam hit another two-strike double to left field, scoring Maglich and putting the Bulls within one.
In the ninth, the Bulls attempted to put together a rally after Kyle Teaf walked and Kevin Merrell singled to put two on with just one out. A disputed call during Levi Borders' at-bat put two outs on the board for Maglich. USF ended up leaving the tying run on second base as the rally fell just short.
Putnam was 2-for-3 on the day and drove in all three runs scored. Maglich was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Merrell had the other multi-hit game for the Bulls as he went 2-for-4 at the plate and extended his on-base streak to 20 games.
Casey Mulholland took the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits in just 4.2 innings of work. Michael Farley threw 2.1 innings in relief, striking out three and giving up just one hit. Tommy Peterson also worked an inning of relief, walking one and giving up a hit.
The Bulls finish their eight-game road stretch with a midweek game at Jacksonville Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m. USF wraps up the regular season with a three-game series against USF May 14-16.
