TAMPA (May 16, 2015) – A heart-stopping, bases-loaded double play in the ninth inning sealed the series win for the USF baseball team as they held off the UCF Knights in a thrilling 5-4 victory.
Tommy Peterson picked up his league-leading 15th save of the year in a stress inducing ninth inning. A single, error and walk loaded the bases with just one out. Tommy Williams grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, ending the game and giving the Bulls the win.
UCF (31-25, 10-14 American) took an early 2-0 lead on a Eugene Vazquez two RBI triple in the top of the second inning. The Knights lead wouldn't last long as the Bulls (32-22-1, 13-11 American) used a two-out rally to plate three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Andres Leal and Zac Gilcrease drew back-to-back walks with one out. After an Austin Lueck strikeout put two outs on the board, Kyle Teaf singled to right field to score Leal from second. Kevin Merrell followed up with an RBI single of his own to left to score Teaf and tie the game. Luke Maglich, extending his on-base streak to 26 games, singled to center to score Teaf and give USF the lead.
The Bulls would tack on another two runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead.
Gilcrease led off with a single and came home on Teaf's second RBI single of the day. Kevin Merrell recorded his second hit of the day to put runners on the corners for Maglich. The right fielder recorded a sacrifice fly, scoring Teaf and putting USF up 5-2.
The Knights attempted to come back, plating runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Dylan Salberg sacrifice himself to score Kam Gellinger in the seventh and Jordan Savinon hit a solo home run in the eighth to make it a 5-4 game.
