ORLANDO, Fla. (May 1, 2015)— The USF baseball team dropped the first of a three-game series with UCF in a 3-0 loss Friday night at Jay Bergman Field. The Bulls dropped to 28-17-1 and 9-7 in the American. The Knights improved to 27-19 and 6-10.
The Knights took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back home runs by James Vasquez and Erik Barber in the first inning and that was all the offense they would need.
In the second, UCF would plate another run on a sac fly by Dylan Moore. Kam Gellinger singled with one out before coming around to third on a JoMarcos Woods single. Gellinger would score as Moore flied out to right field.
USF had a chance to break through in the top of the second. After singles by Luke Maglich and Andres Leal put two on with two outs, Ryan Valdes drew a walk to load the bases for Kyle Teaf. Teaf grounded out to the first basemen and the Bulls left the bases loaded.
Herget took the loss, giving up just three runs on seven hits in six innings pitched. The junior struck out five while walking just two. With the five strikeouts, Herget is now ninth all-time in career strikeouts at USF and has 92 on the year to surpass his 90 from the 2014 season.
Right-hander Zach Rodgers went eight innings for the Knights, allowing just four hits and striking out ten around three walks.
For the game, the Bulls left eight men on base. USF got the leadoff runner on base in four innings, but left the bases loaded in the second and runners on the corners in the fifth.
Maglich collected two of the Bulls five hits while Lueck and Andres Leal and Levi Borders all picked up a hit apiece.
With the top four teams in the conference all losing tonight and Tulane picking up a win, there is now a five-way tie at the top of the conference standings. The Bulls will look to break through the jam as they face off against the Knights once again Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
