ORLANDO (May 2, 2015) – The USF baseball team took an early lead, but it wasn't enough in a narrow 2-1 loss to UCF Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Bulls to 28-18-1 and 9-8 in the American while the Knights improved to 28-19 and 7-10.
The Bulls got on the board first with an RBI single by Andres Leal in the second inning. Luke Borders and Luke Maglich led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put two on with no outs. Buddy Putnam grounded into a double play to put two quick outs on the board with Leal on deck. Leal pushed a single into the gap behind second base to score Borders and give USF the early 1-0 lead.
UCF knotted the game in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field. USF starter Ryan Valdes walked the bases loaded before a 7-4-3 double play put two quick outs on the board, but not before a run scored. Valdes got a strikeout to end the inning and keep UCF from taking the lead.
After four scoreless innings for both sides, the Knights took the lead in the seventh. On in relief, Michael Farley walked Dylan Moore to lead off the inning. A wild pitch, fly out and sacrifice fly moved Moore all the way around the bases to put UCF up 2-1.
USF out-hit UCF, 6-4, and left just five men on base to the Knights eight. Leal had the only multiple-hit game for the Bulls, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Luke Borders was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Kyle Teaf, Austin Lueck and Maglich all recorded a hit apiece for the Bulls.
Valdes earned a no-decision, throwing six innings of one-run ball. He struck out just two and walked seven to go with four hits. Farley (3-2) earned the loss, giving up one run on no hits while striking out two and walking one.
Cre Finfrock (7-4) earned the win and went the distance for UCF, giving up just one earned run on six hits, while striking out four to go with two walks.
The Bulls and Knights will meet in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
