ORLANDO (May 3, 2015) – Kyle Teaf had a five-hit day and Zac Gilcrease reached base every time he came to the plate as the USF baseball team pounded out 15 hits in a 9-3 win over UCF Sunday afternoon. The Bulls improved to 29-18-1 and 10-8 in the American while the Knights dropped to 28-20 and 7-11.
Teaf recorded the first five-hit game of the season for any Bull, going 5-for-6 with two runs driven in and two runs scored. Gilcrease, back in the lineup for just the second time since March 21, was 2-for-2 with three walks, an RBI and three runs scored.
For the second straight game, the Bulls took an early 1-0 lead. Teaf led off the game with a single, before advancing to second on a passed ball. Luke Maglich drew a two-out walk to keep the inning going and bring up Luke Borders. On a 2-0 count, Borders lined a single just over the glove of the second basemen to score Teaf.
The Bulls put up a three-spot in the second to extend their lead. Austin Lueck hit a one-out single to center field and a Zac Gilcrease walk put two on for USF. Teaf cleared the bases with a double to put USF up 3-0. Kevin Merrell singled and advanced to second on the throw home where Teaf was tagged for the second out.
With Levi Borders at the plate, Merrell came home from second on a wild pitch that got away from the UCF catcher, putting USF up 4-0. Levi doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch but was left stranded at third on a strikeout by Luke Borders.
The Knights struck in the bottom of the fourth, plating three runs. Back-to-back singles put two on with two outs for UCF. A walk loaded the bases and a passed ball scored one. A Dylan Moore double brought home two Knights to make it a one-run game.
USF would get the three runs back in the top of the seventh. A muffed throw by the pitcher allowed Buddy Putnam to reach base to lead off the inning. An Andres Leal single put two on before a Lueck sac bunt moved the runners to scoring position. Gilcrease singled to left field to score Putnam and then stole second to once again put two in scoring position.
Teaf beat out a bunt to load the bases for Merrell who came through with a single on a 2-1 count. Maglich drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to bring in a free run for the Bulls and put them up 7-3.
In the ninth, the Bulls increased their breathing room by plating two more runs. Gilcrease led off with his third walk of the game and advanced to second on a Teaf single. An out in foul territory and defensive miscues by UCF allowed both base runners to advance into scoring position. An errant throw on a Maglich grounder allowed Teaf and Gilcrease to score putting the game out of reach for the Knights.
Brandon Lawson picked up his first win of the season, throwing 2.1 innings of two-hit ball. The sophomore walked none and struck out two in the outing. Tommy Peterson picked up his league-leading 14th save of the season, tossing three shutout innings.
The Bulls will continue their road stretch with a midweek tilt against Florida Tuesday, May 5, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network and fans can watch using the Watch ESPN app.
