NEW ORLEANS (May 9, 2015) – The USF baseball team dropped the second game of its series with Tulane Saturday afternoon, 5-3. The Bulls are now 30-20-1 overall and 11-9 in the American, while Tulane is 30-19 and 10-10.
The Bulls took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Kyle Teaf drew a two-out walk and stole second to put a runner in scoring position for Kevin Merrell. Merrell singled to left field allowing Teaf to score from second.
The Green Wave would respond with a two-run bottom of the inning. A hit by pitch and walk put two on with one out. Stephen Alemais singled to center field to tie the game and Lex Kaplan hit a fly ball to right field, scoring Richard Carthon and giving Tulane its first lead.
USF would take back the lead in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a pair of Tulane errors. Austin Lueck and Zac Gilcrease led off with back-to-back walks. Teaf put down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error allowed him to reach base. The errant throw allowed Lueck to score and Gilcrease to move from first to third. Merrell hit his second RBI single of the day to score Gilcrease and give the Bulls the 3-2 lead.
Tulane answered back in the sixth with a two-run home run by Tyler Wilson. In the eighth, the Green Wave plated another run on a solo home run by Jackson Johnson and that was all they needed to secure the win.
Merrell had two of the Bulls three hits, both being RBI singles. Levi Borders picked up the other hit for USF with a single in the first inning.
Ryan Valdes (5-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out five and walking just one. Patrick Duester earned the win, for Tulane throwing 3.1 innings of shutout ball.
USF and Tulane will meet in the rubber match of the series Sunday, May 10, at 2 p.m. EST.
