TAMPA (Sept. 17, 2015)- Lucky number seven.
Thanks to goals from five different players, the RV/No. 24 USF women's soccer team picked up its seventh win and improved to 7-0-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory over Georgia Southern (3-4-1) Thursday night.
Ocean Parr got the scoring started in the 20th minute on an assist by Cristina Ferral. Parr's shot came from 25 yards out and tipped off the GSU goalie's hands before falling into the net. It was the fourth goal of the season for the Ontario native.
Olivia Chance notched her sixth goal of the season on Ferral's second assist of the evening. On the cross from Ferral, Chance launched a shot from just inside the 18 yard box to put USF in front 2-0.
While leading a stonewall defense, senior Jackie Simpson (Lithia, Fla.) found herself scoring a goal off a corner from Grace Adams. Simpson headed the shot from Adams, but had her first attempt blocked by an Eagle defender. On the rebound, Simpson slid the ball past the goalie to make it a 3-0 game in the 39th minute.
Despite being held to just six shots in the second half, the Bulls made the most of them, recording two more goals in the final 45 minutes. Jessica Hamrick (Winter Park, Fla.) scored her first career goal in the 75th minute off a Chance corner kick. The sophomore headed the ball straight into the center of the net, making it a 4-0 game.
The last goal of the evening came just three minutes later, once again on a corner kick from Chance. Diana Saenz (San Jose, Costa Rica) netted her first goal of the season on the Chance corner to put the game even more out of reach.
The Bulls dominated the first half of play, notching 19 shots, including 11 on goal. USF forced GSU keeper Emily Egan to make eight saves in the first half alone. The Eagles recorded just one shot in the first half thanks to the Bulls' dominating defensive line.
For the game, the Bulls outshot the Eagles 25-4. USF recorded 15 shots on goal and forced the Eagles' keeper to make 10 saves on the night. Defending American Goalkeeper of the Week Kat Elliott (Bradenton, Fla.) recorded one save in 76 minutes of play. Junior Alyssa Curtis, who replaced Elliott in goal for the final 14 minutes, also made an impressive save to keep the shutout alive.
This was the second game of the season where the Bulls scored five goals and the fifth shutout of the year. USF has now scored 20 goals on the year while holding opponents to just three and not allowing any goals inside Corbett Stadium.
Up next for the Bulls is a trip to Lubbock, Texas to take on No. 17 Texas Tech Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m.
