TAMPA, SEPT. 27, 2015 – The No. 24 USF women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in conference play and 9-1-1 on the year with a 1-0 win over Temple Sunday afternoon at Corbett Stadium.
“It was tough game,” head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. “Every Sunday is going to be a battle both physically and mentally and Temple didn't make it easy.”
USF is now 5-0 at home this season and is outscoring opponents 15-0. Combined with the men's team, the two teams are 11-0 at home and have a 26-2 goal differential at Corbett Stadium.
The Bulls got on the board in the 23rd minute off the foot of Leticia Skeete. Trudi Carter fought off three Owl defenders before playing the ball to Olivia Chance. Chance crossed the ball to Skeete in the box and Skeete was able to slide the ball past the Temple keeper, Jordan Nash, to put USF on top.
“It was definitely a team effort,” Skeete said. “Our midfield and forward lines have been really connected lately and Liv saw me come across and she knew to slip to me and I just had to calm down and place it.”
Sienna Brooks almost made it a 2-0 game in the 30th minute. Ocean Parr drove the ball into the box, before crossing to Brooks who had a perfect look on the goal. Brooks shot went right at the Temple keeper who made the save.
The Bulls continued to create multiple opportunities late in the first half. A free kick by Cristina Ferral from just outside the 18-yard box was barely saved by Nash and a Jackie Simpson shot hit the crossbar. Nikki Lauderback had a header off a free kick, but her attempt would go just wide.
In the second half, Jessica Hamrick had a shot punched out by Nash, before A.J. Blount sent a rebound shot just over the net. Chance went one-on-one with Nash, but couldn't create a shot as Nash came off her line to grab the ball.
USF recorded 11 shots in the first half while holding the Owls (8-4-0, 0-2-0 American) to just three. For the game, the Bulls notched 19 total shots and forced Nash to make seven saves. The USF backline dominated once again, holding the Owls to just seven shots on the game.
Sophomore keeper Kat Elliott posted her 7th shutout of the season, making two saves to bring her weekend total to 10. Elliott now has 13 career shutouts to put her in third place all-time at USF.
Up next for the Bulls is a two-game conference road swing at Cincinnati and East Carolina. USF and Cincinnati will face off on Friday, Oct. 2, at noon before heading to East Carolina on Sunday, Oct, 4, at 1 p.m.
“We're just taking this one weekend at a time,” Skeete said. “We know that this weekend may not have been our best performance but we're working every day and continuing to get better. We're really excited for this weekend and planning to win both games.”
The USF women's soccer team has posted three consecutive 10-plus win seasons and four in the last five years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010 and returned in 2014. USF returns 20 players from last year's roster including All-American Athletic Conference first team midfielder Olivia Chance and second team defender Jackie Simpson. They also bring back 12 players that appeared in 15 or more games last season.
