Sigurdardottir Scores in Loss to UConn

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 16, 2016)— The USF women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the UConn Huskies Sunday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The Bulls dropped to 10-2-1, 2-2-1 on the year, while UConn improved to 12-2-1, 5-0-1.

In the 72nd minute, the Bulls would find the back of the net as Gudrun Sigurdardottir netted a beautiful goal on an assist from Andrea Hauksdottir. Sigurdardottir struck from just inside the 18-yard box, bending the ball just past the hands of the UConn keeper.

Stephanie Ribeiro scored two Husky goals in the first half. The first came in the 16th minute as she took a shot into the left side of the net. In the 36th minute, she struck again, this time slotting the ball just past the outreached hand of keeper Kat Elliott.

In the 60th minute, Rachel Hill would net the third goal, heading the ball into the upper right corner of the net.

Key Stat:

  • The Huskies narrowly outshot the Bulls with a 16-14 advantage. Eleven of USF's 14 shots came in the second half.

Notables:

  • The first UConn goal was the first allowed by USF since 2013 and the first in over 300 minutes of play between the two teams.
  • Thanks to Sigurdardottir's goal, USF avoided a shutout and has only been shut out once this season.
  • Nine of USF's last 10 goals have come off the feet of freshman.
  • Sigurdardottir is responsible for two of the last three USF goals.
  • Denise Schilte-Brown needs just one more win to reach 100 wins as head coach at USF.

Up Next:
The Bulls will return home for their final home weekend of the season. USF will take on ECU Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. before taking on Cincinnati on Oct. 23. Sunday's game against Cincinnati will be Senior Day, with kickoff at 1 p.m.
