TAMPA, FEB. 14, 2016-- The 13th-ranked Bulls closed out Sunday's consolation draw at the ITA Indoor National Championship with a 4-2 victory over No. 16 San Diego.
The doubles ladder versus top opponents was an overall success as the Bulls advanced to 3-0 in the championships, totaling five wins and two losses on the year. In the No. 2 position, Sasha Gozun (Orhei, Moldova) and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy (Donetsk, Ukraine) defeated Uros Petronijevic and Joshua Page, 6-3. Senior pairing of Roberto Cid (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz (Gijon Asturas, Spain) were also victorious as they won 6-2 against Romain Kalaydijan and Jaan Kononov in the No. 3 position. The USF duos were undefeated in Charlottesville this weekend.
For the fifth time in seven competitions, No. 7 Cid dropped his first set only to remain successful in the match. The All-American knocked off No. 20 Petronijevic 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. His comeback clinched the match victory for the Bulls.
Gonzalez-Muniz started twice in the ITA Indoor Championships, and posted a dominating 6-1, 6-0 result over San Diego's Joshua Page at the No. 5 spot. His record currently stands at 4-2 on the season.
Kalyuzhnyy fought a three set battle with Jaan Kononov, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, to give the Bulls their third point of the night. .
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts against No. 55 South Carolina. On Sunday, Feb. 21, a rematch will take place against No. 16 San Diego at home at 11 a.m.
