Montgomery, Ala. Feb. 26, 2016 – For the second straight year, the 14th-ranked USF men's tennis team (7-3) dominated Boise St., 4-0, in the first match of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic.
USF took the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. The 46th-ranked pairing of Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.) and Justin Roberts (Nassau, Bahamas) earned the first victory of the doubles competition, 6-2, over Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell. The duo is now 5-1 on the season. Roberto Cid (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz (Gijon Asturas, Spain) are winners of six straight matches, as they defeated Brian Foley and Pedro Platzeck, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point.
Moving to 6-1 on the season, Peter Bertran (Santiago, Dominican Republic) worked hard for a straight -set victory over Platzeck on court five, winning 6-4, 7-5. On court three, Sasha Gozun (Orhei, Moldova) won his first set over Butters, 6-2 before rallying from a 5-2 deficit to win 7-5 in the second.
No. 5 Roberto Cid, last year's Blue Gray Classic MVP, took his match 6-3, 7-5, to clinch the win for USF and improve to 8-1 on the season.
USF will continue the run to defend their title on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when they take on Oklahoma State in the second round of the tournament.
