Explosive Third Inning Leads Bulls to Dominant Win

TAMPA, March 13, 2016 – The USF softball team used a nine-run third inning to defeat North Florida 12-1 Sunday afternoon at the USF Softball Stadium. The Bulls have now won 11 straight games and 17 of their last 19 to improve to 19-9 on the season.

Fueled by a two-run home run from Nunn and a bases-clearing error on the UNF left fielder, the Bulls exploded for nine runs on just five hits in the third inning.

Nunn led off with a one-out single, before coming home on an RBI double by Mo Santos. Lauren Evans reached on a walk and came home on a Boyle two-RBI single. A walk issued to Amber Donovan and a hit-by-pitch for Weber loaded the bases with two outs. Sam Worrell cleared the bases with a two-base error by the left fielder and was brought home on a Lee Ann Spivey RBI single.

Nunn recorded her second home run is as many days, launching a two-out shot over the wall in right center to plate Spivey and make it 12-0 USF at the end of three innings.

The Bulls got on the board in the first inning as Mia Fung hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season over the left field wall to make it a 1-0 game.

After back-to-back infield singles from Cassidy Boyle and Astin Donovan to start the second inning, Kristen Wyckoff singled over the head of the UNF first baseman to drive home Boyle and move the runners into scoring position. Juli Weber reached on an error, driving in Donovan to make it 3-0 after two innings.

UNF got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by Minnie Cocuzza.

Nunn improved to 9-5 on the year, giving up just one run in 4.1 innings, while striking out five and walking just one. Emily Gaitan came in in the fifth, striking out a pair.

The Bulls are back on the field Wednesday, March 16, when they take on Lehigh and Maine in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
