TAMPA (March 22, 2016) – The USF women's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine matches Tuesday afternoon by defeating conference foe Cincinnati, 6-1, at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Bulls (11-5) started the afternoon with an early 1-0 lead as they won the doubles point. Back from injury, freshman Vanja Klaric (Serbia) paired up with senior Chloe Murphy (England) to win court three, 6-0. USF tandem of Juliana Cardoso (Descalvado, Brazil) and Jessica Cortes Chaves (Monterrey, Mexico) earned their eighth doubles win of the season by defeating their opponents on court two, 6-4.
USF freshman Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) added the first singles point with a strong 6-4, 6-2 win on court five. The victory gives Dzenga five consecutive wins and moves her record to 7-4 on the season. Junior Olga Martinez (Barcelona, Spain) would push the lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-3, straight set win on court three.
Sophomore Juliana Cardoso extended her winning streak to eight with an impressive three set victory for the Bulls. Cardoso dropped the first set but battled back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Junior Vera Bessonova (Moscow, Russia) secured the fifth point for USF with a solid 6-7, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-2) win on court two.
The sixth and final point of the afternoon was earned by American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Jessica Cortes Chaves. Cortes Chaves improved her record to 7-2 in the premiere spot with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win for the Bulls.
The Bulls are back in action Sunday, March 27, as they take on Tulane in the fourth conference match of the season at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts at noon. Admission for all home matches is free to the public.
