Santos' Clutch Home Run Leads Bulls To 3-2 Win

Box Score

TAMPA (March 6, 2016)— The USF softball team improved to 11-9 on the season, with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Central Michigan (4-9) Sunday afternoon. The Bulls finished the first weekend of the USF Series with a 4-1 record and are the winners of three straight.

After a scoreless first three innings, CMU took a 2-0 lead on a home run from Katelyn Rentschler. CarolAnn Sexauer singled to begin the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Sydney Heath.  After a popup to Cassidy Boyle at shortstop, Rentschler homered to drive in Heath and herself and give the Chippewas the lead.

USF answered right back with a three-run home run from Mo Santos. Erica Nunn reached on an error with one out and was pinch-ran for by Lindsey Devitt. Mia Fung followed with a single through the right side to put two on the base paths. After Sam Worrell popped up to the shortstop, Santos entered to pinch hit for Cassidy Boyle.

Santos delivered, driving a full count pitch over the wall in left field to give USF the 3-2 lead. It was her second home run of the season and 10th of her career.

Juli Weber went 1-for-3 at the plate, extending her hitting streak to 12 games and her on-base streak to a team-leading 16 games.

Cheyenne Eggens improved to 5-0 on the year, throwing four innings and giving up just two runs on three hits. Nunn picked up her second save in as many days, giving up just two hits in three innings, while striking out four.

The Bulls are back in action with a trio of midweek games against Detroit and Utah. USF will face Detroit on Monday, March 7, at 5 p.m. and will play a doubleheader with Utah on Wednesday, March 9, beginning at 5 p.m.
