Bulls Sweep Utah in Midweek Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TAMPA, March 9, 2016 – Stellar performances from Mia Fung and Lee Ann Spivey helped lead the USF softball team to a midweek sweep of the Utah Utes. The Bulls took game one, 6-1, and followed with a six-inning, 9-1, walk-off win.

Fung was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI to lead the Bulls to a 6-1 victory over Utah in game one of the doubleheader.

The Bulls responded to the Utes taking a one-run lead in the top of the first with two runs of their own. A pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no outs, allowing Lee Ann Spivey to tie the game with an RBI single to left field. Erica Nunn was then issued a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run and give USF the lead.

In the third, Fung hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season and second of the week to put USF up 3-1. Fung now has eight career home runs to her name after hitting three in her freshman campaign.

Keeping up the trend of scoring in odd-numbered innings, the Bulls tacked on their fourth run of the game on an RBI-double by Nunn to plate Fung from second. In the sixth, Juli Weber used an RBI single and a fielding error by the Utah centerfielder to plate Lauren Evans and Astin Donovan and make it a 6-1 game.

Freshman Cheyenne Eggens almost went the distance, throwing 6.1 innings for her longest outing of the season. Eggens scattered six hits, giving up just one run (0 earned), and one walk. Nunn came in to close out the game, notching a pair of strikeouts to leave the bases loaded.

In game two, the Bulls got on the board early thanks to Spivey's fourth home run of the season, a two-run bomb, and 28th of her career. Spivey is now just nine home runs away from breaking the USF career home run record held by Kourtney Salvarola (36).

Spivey continued the hot hitting in the third, bringing home Weber once again on an RBI single. An error by the Utah right fielder allowed Spivey to advance all the way to third on the play, but she was left stranded and unable to add any more runs.

The Utes scored in the top of the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Kristen Stewart to cut the USF lead down to two runs. The Bulls would answer right back with a Mo Santos two-RBI single to extend the lead and give USF some breathing room.

With the bases loaded, Morgan Gross wore a pitch, bringing in a run. Weber capped off her 3-for-4 performance with a two-RBI double, and Fung hit a walk-off double as USF downed Utah 9-1.

Nunn was stellar in her six innings of work, scattering four hits and giving up just one unearned run while striking out five. Spivey was 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and 3 RBI and Fung was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Bulls will be back on the diamond Friday, March 11, when they take on USC-Upstate and New Mexico State. Game one against USC-Upstate is slated for a 1:45 p.m. start with game two against New Mexico State at 4 p.m.
