TAMPA, FLA. (April 1, 2016) – The University of South Florida men's tennis team fell to No. 18 Oklahoma, 4-1, Friday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The No. 17 Bulls (13-7) came out strong as they took the first two doubles matches to clinch the first point of the afternoon. Seniors Roberto Cid (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz (Gijon Asturas, Spain) started things off with a quick 6-1 win on court three. Juniors Sasha Gozun (Orhei, Moldova) and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy (Donetsk, Ukraine) followed up with a 6-1 win of their own to give the Bulls an early lead.
The lead did not last long as the Sooners bounced back with the first singles win of the match. USF battled, but Oklahoma rattled off two more singles wins to take a 3-1 lead.
With three matches left on the court, the Bulls needed all of them to take the victory. Gonzalez-Muniz came out strong to win the first set on court five but his opponent pushed the match to a deciding third set. Gonzalez-Muniz came up just short, falling 6-4, 4-6, 2-6 as Oklahoma clinched the match.
The Bulls are back in action Saturday, April 2, as they take on in-state rival UCF at 11 a.m. and No. 27 SMU at 4 p.m. at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. Admission for all home matches is free to the public.
