TAMPA, FLA. (April 2, 2016) – The University of South Florida men's tennis team fell to No. 27 SMU, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in a rain delayed match which was played at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The match was originally schedule to be played at the USF Varsity Tennis courts at 11 a.m. but due to weather and travel concerns the match was moved to the indoor courts at the IMG Academy.
The No. 17 Bulls (13-8) looked sharp from the start as they took the first two doubles matches to clinch the first point of the match. Seniors Roberto Cid (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz (Gijon Asturas, Spain) came up clutch to win court three, 7-5. Juniors Sasha Gozun (Orhei, Moldova) and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy (Donetsk, Ukraine) would follow up with a 6-4 win of their own to give the Bulls an early lead.
Cid also shined in singles play for USF. Playing in the premiere position, Cid came up with huge 6-4, 7-5 to secure the second point of the match. However, the Bulls would not see much more success in singles as SMU would rattle off four wins to seal the victory, 4-2.
The Bulls are back in action Sunday, April 3, as they take on in-state rival UCF at 2 p.m. at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. Sunday's match against UCF will also consist of senior day festivities between doubles and singles play. Admission for all home matches is free to the public.
