TAMPA (April 3, 2016) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team fell to No. 64 Rice, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in the last home match of the season.
The Bulls (13-6) started the afternoon trailing 1-0 after dropping the doubles point. USF and Rice split the first two matches, so it came down to court three to decide the doubles point. Bulls tandem of freshman Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Senior Chloe Murphy (England) forced a tie-break but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-5).
Heading into singles USF would need four of the six matches to seal the victory. However, Rice carried their momentum from doubles right into singles play. The Bulls held leads on two courts, but the Owls were able to take the first three singles matches to earn the win.
The loss snaps an 11-match winning streak for USF. Its longest streak since the 2013-14 season when they won 15 straight matches. The Bulls had not suffered a loss since Feb. 28 against No. 14 Tulsa.
The Bulls are back in action Saturday, April 9, as they hit the road to take on the University of North Florida at 12:00 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla.
