Bulls' Season Ends in Tallahassee Regional

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., May 21, 2016 – The USF softball team held off a late rally by the Florida A&M Rattlers to secure a 6-4 win and stay alive in the Tallahassee Regional. The Bulls advanced to their second elimination game of the day, facing South Carolina for the second time.

With a 6-2 lead in the seventh inning, FAMU struck twice to make it a two run game with just one out. Despite a pair of errors and loading the bases, the Bulls were able to make it out of the inning with the win.

USF snapped a 13 inning scoreless streak with an RBI single in the first inning. Astin Donovan led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Lauren Evans continued her hot hitting, plating Donovan with an RBI single.

The Bulls started the second off hot with Mia Fung reaching on a two-base error and Wyckoff drawing a walk. An Astin Donovan sacrifice fly plated Fung and Juli Weber followed with an RBI single to score Wyckoff. Weber moved to third on a single from Lee Ann Spivey and stole home to make it 4-0 after two innings.

Astin Donovan, playing in the leadoff spot, would add another RBI to her resume with her second home run of the season. Her home run set the USF team record for home runs in a season with 49 this year. The 2005 team held the record previously with 48.

FAMU would end the shutout bid in the fifth inning. A bloop single to centerfield would plate one run before a wild pitch plated another.

USF would get one of the runs back in the sixth with an RBI double from Evans. Amber Donovan drew a walk and stole second before coming home on the double from Evans.

Cheyenne Eggens earned her first win since March 9 against Utah, throwing four innings of three-hit ball and allowing just one run. Erica Nunn picked up her sixth save of the season, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing two unearned runs.

South Carolina 6, USF 0

Once again, the Gamecocks struck in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. With two quick outs on the board, a double and a throwing error allowed Kaylea Snaer to come all the way around the bases.

In the third, a bases loaded RBI single from Krystan White made it 2-0. On an attempt to turn a double play, the Bulls got out number two at the plate, but a throwing error from Spivey would allow a run to score. Another RBI single made it 4-0 before a groundout would end the inning.

In the fourth, South Carolina would use a sacrifice fly and an RBI double to plate another pair of runs, giving them a six-run lead.

The Bulls would have scoring opportunities, even loading the bases with just one out in the third, but the South Carolina defense would keep them off the board.

Nunn took the loss, finishing her senior year with a 27-12 record, 223 strikeouts and a career best 1.71 ERA. She threw 11 complete games, five shutouts and held opponents to a .206 average in her senior season.
